… and a few thoughts on the Art and Craft of Photography

About

Been involved in photography for over thirty years.  Shot professionally at different times throughout those years… sometimes just for the pure joy of it .  A former  member of the Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC) and the Professional Photographers Association of British Columbia (PPABC).  Now days I shoot mostly for stock –  completely taken with Mediterranean Europe –  travel there every chance I get.  I also get a kick out of  teaching, and so I put on workshops from time to time… some locally (visual design and composition, digital colour management and digital work-flow).  Oh yes, I put on an annual workshop in Provence (tough job, I know… but somebody’s got to do it).

More than anything though, I think of myself as a amateur… a life-long learner.  Thirty years in, and I know I’ve only scratched the surface.  Still excited!  Still wake up each morning thinking about photography; fall asleep each night thinking about photography.

As for equipment, I’m a complete brand agnostic. I just don’t care any more… the image is the only thing that matters! When anyone asks me about the merits of one brand over the other, or which lens, or filter to buy next… I shrug my shoulders and tell them the only piece of equipment that really matters, is the one 6 inches behind the camera.

I’m amazed at the power of the still image to command a viewers’ attention… to evoke emotion, to bring anger, or compassion, and even to galvanize a nation or the world to action.  Susan Sontag, in her book “On Photography” wrote, “Photographs may be more powerful than moving images… because they are a neat slice of time, not a flow.” And in this is the true power of still images: to capture a brief moment, and hold it frozen in time for forever.
